Craggy Range Gimblet Gravels Syrah
Gimblett Gravels | Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand | 100% Syrah
A powerful yet refined Syrah from the renowned Gimblett Gravels of Hawke’s Bay. Grown on the region’s distinctive stony soils, this wine reflects decades of meticulous vineyard work, with low-vigour, high-density vines and carefully selected clones producing remarkable concentration and character.
Vineyard & Winemaking
The 2024 vintage followed a cool, late winter and mild spring before a warm, dry summer allowed for extended hang time and excellent flavour development. Fruit from 11 parcels was hand-picked and hand-sorted, with most of the grapes destemmed before fermentation in oak cuves, stainless steel and concrete vats.
The wine was gently plunged during an average 20-day maceration, followed by malolactic fermentation and 16 months of maturation in French and Austrian oak, 22% of which was new.
Tasting Notes
Deep purple with garnet highlights, this Syrah opens with expressive aromas of violet, dark fruit and aniseed, alongside lifted floral notes. The palate is plush and concentrated without feeling heavy, layered with blackberry, cracked black pepper and violet. Fine tannins and vibrant acidity provide structure, leading to a long, mineral finish with subtle black olive character.
A Proven Track Record
The Gimblett Gravels Syrah has earned an impressive list of accolades over previous vintages, including Best in Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards and multiple 94–95 point scores from leading wine critics.
